After MS Updates Keyboard and Mouse are not responding

HELP, After automatic updates (yesterday), today multiple pc's have lost
their mouse functionality, or both mouse and keyboard. Last known settings,
save mode, nothing works! In the Bios I'm able to use the keyboard. Swapped
hardware, no results. I want to try a system restore, but how to do without a
working mouse and keyboard?

I tried to do a system restore via the command prompt (in safe mode) but
have to logon first. At that point keyboard or mouse input is already
impossible.

Could be that it persist in the INF files. I'm able to access the c: drives
from a remote computer. See that an usbport.pnf resides from March 01 2008.
All the desktops are the same and on another this file has not been updated.
Can I simply overwrite the file? Or am I not looking in the right direction?

Noticed a lot changed files from 29 Februari 2008, which probably are
installed yesterday (when shutting down). The mouhid.sys and kbdhid.sys are
newer, but I can't replace them as they are in use.

Please, any suggestions!

Regards Dennis

I spent a few hours trying to figure out the problem. I found if I did a reboot to last known good configuration, I could get it to work for a minute, but it would automatically start updating drivers for new devices. And after the update was complete, the mouse and keyboard stopped working. Then I tried a Reboot to an earlier date and it started and worked fine. So I left it alone and it updated itself again last night and installed the updates, and the mouse doesn't work again. Back to square one after a few hours of trouble shooting. Definitely an MS Updates issue.

Does the behavior persist after installing any available driver updates for
the hardware? Does the behavior persist if you use a new (or another) mouse
and keyboard?

Windows version(s)?

Assuming Vista SP1:

A device driver is not installed, or a hardware device does not function
correctly after you install Windows Vista Service Pack 1

Unlimited installation and compatibility support for Vista SP1 is available

I am having the same problems. I have restored my computer 3 times to
several days before it happens and then I have the same problem again and
again. It is for sure a MS update causing this because everything works
perfectly everytime I restore it (Norton rescue) and then the Keyboard and
mouse don't work anymore.

I have a microsoft USB keyboard and mouse combo
Vista Home Premium (Not SP1)
The problem started with the April uptades.
All my drivers are current.

Hi PA Bear,

I'm not able to install any driver updates, as I cannot logon to the pc.
It's a Dell OptiPlex 755, which came with a simple generic USB keyboard and
mouse. It's running Vista Business. I changed hardware, but no luck. It a
Dutch version, so SP1 is not avialable yet. RDP support is not active,
otherwise I should be able to run a RDP and do some workaround. I'm able to
access the drive and services through a 2003 box. But activated a lot under
services, but RDP still not avialable.

Thanks for your input.

Regards Dennis

I'm having this problem. I posted on a different MSDN forum and got 3 others
saying they have the same problem. All report it starts when last Tuesday's
updates are installed. One of them isolated it to a particular update -
KB938371.

> Does the behavior persist after installing any available driver updates for

> and keyboard?

Yes, the behavior persists regardless of driver. My hardware is a < l yr
old MS optical mouse on an 15 month old Dell Dimension. It persists no
matter what mouse is installed. Several people are reporting, and I can
confirm, that you can get the mouse back by installing earlier image backups,
but once the update is on the machine, any mouse that is detected will stop
working as soon as the driver is installed - plug in new mouse, it works, a
minute later "detected new hardware" followed by no mouse.

> Windows version(s)?

Always a version of Vista. In my case Ultimate.

> Assuming Vista SP1:

I do not have SP1 installed. In fact the KB938371 is apparently a
pre-requisite for SP1.
