I'm having this problem. I posted on a different MSDN forum and got 3 others
saying they have the same problem. All report it starts when last Tuesday's
updates are installed. One of them isolated it to a particular update -
KB938371.

Yes, the behavior persists regardless of driver. My hardware is a < l yr
old MS optical mouse on an 15 month old Dell Dimension. It persists no
matter what mouse is installed. Several people are reporting, and I can
confirm, that you can get the mouse back by installing earlier image backups,
but once the update is on the machine, any mouse that is detected will stop
working as soon as the driver is installed - plug in new mouse, it works, a
minute later "detected new hardware" followed by no mouse.

Always a version of Vista. In my case Ultimate.

I do not have SP1 installed. In fact the KB938371 is apparently a
pre-requisite for SP1.
