Did you try going through the activation process?

You don't say how you came by this allegedly legal copy. If it was
OEM-installed, you may be required to enter the product key now. It should
be on a sticker on your computer. You didn't say whether you actually tried
to activate. You say you tried repairing startup but not whether you tried
the entire repair process? This is the one where it verifies all system
files and restores any that differ from the originals. You will have to
install any updates or service packs afterwards, but it should leave all
your user accounts and settings intact. Again if you have an OEM machine do
you have a system restore partition with a utility to restore the computer
to factory new condition?

Cheers,

Earle

Where did you get the XP disk? If it's a Dell disk I don't think
dual-booting is allowed.

Did the DVD come with official Microsoft packaging? If so, the product key
should be somewhere within the packaging. If not you're copy is illegal and
Microsoft will not activate it.

If you used the 'repair startup' option from the DVD that should not flag
activation. If you did a 'repair' as in re-installing over the original copy
then that would probably flag activation.

At the moment, to give you some time, I suggest you take a look at this link
from my website:
http://vistasupport.mvps.org/run_win...r_120_days.htm Hopefully
you can re-set the activation timer for a further 30 days (yes the link
say's 120 days but you need to apply this fix on 3 occasions to achieve
that.)

The obvious answer, of course, is to use the telephone activation (see:
http://vistasupport.mvps.org/product...ady_in_use.htm ) But perhaps
you can describe more fully what you originally did, giving as much detail
as possible.

Regarding your comments in your last post to Earle Horton you do not have to
give any details of who or where you got your copy of Windows, frankly it is
no one's business but your own (the only caveat to my last point is that it
is a legal copy (which you have pointed out it is), after all no one will
help if it is a pirated copy. Obviously it is useful to know whether it is
indeed an OEM or Retail copy because that helps. Other than that you don't
need to divulge any other private information and I advise anyone 'never' to
include details of their product licence key.

The DVD should have come in a jewel case in which case the product key
number should be on the back of the jewel case or DVD sleeve. The only time
you are asked to input your licence key is when you first install the
product. You can, of course, ignore inputting the product key, but you will
need to input it within the 30 day period or prior to activation (you can do
this from control panel>system)
