After replacing a motherboard activation fails

After a complete motherboard failure on my server, I replaced the Motherboard
with a new Core duo Quad motherboard. I was able to move the hard drive
controller and the hard drives to the new system and detect all hardware in
safe mode. When I attempt to boot, I am told that the system must be
activated. "Do you want to activate now". The system then hangs at the splash
screen. I don't think I have an internet connection because I can't get in to
set the IP address. Does anyone know a way to proceed.

You have to call Microsoft. A new mobo is like a different PC. You ma
get to the internet in safe mode with internet - keep tapping F8 afte
power-on

Also hopefully the SBS license used with the MB wasn't OEM as it's not
transferable to new hardware.

Just in the interest of clarity, a new mobo may be allowed with OEM software
under vary narrow parameters. The usual exception is if the mobo mfg /oem
is unable to provide a replacement board, and, usually, if you work with
the mfg/oem to replace the board with the closest thing they have available.

Replacing a p3 board with a dual quad 8 is not likely to pass the smell test.

and, as always, with MS licensing, ymmv.

You can replace the motherboard on ANY OEM install if the replacement
was because of a "Failure" and the old model motherboard is not
available. Calling MS Activation will get it activated.
