after ROM upgrade: ActiveSync crashes when trying to recreate a partnership!

It's always the same darn <censored> with ActiveSync: one is doing a
perfectly normal operation during the lifecycle of a PocketPC, i.e. one
upgrades its ROM and afterwards one has the greatest trouble getting
ActiveSync to work again!

I have gone through this with at least five earlier devices and
ActiveSync versions from 3.1 up to now 3.8 and its still the same
bulls#!$. Is MS ever testing this???

When trying to recreate the partnership with a previously seen, but now
updated device (no matter whether one first deletes the old partnership
or not) ActiveSync dies with an "Unrecoverable error. Please disconnect
your device and restart Microsoft ActiveSync" - which of course doesn't
heal the problem but just makes the same error pop up again.
<censored>

It does not matter whether the device has the same id as before or not!
I tried different new device IDs, but all I ever get is: "Unrecoverable
error..." when trying to (re-)create a partnership with the desktop.

Somewhere there must still be some bits lurking around with some info
about the device.... Does anyone know what else other than the
Profile-directory (under "C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application
Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles" and everything in the registry below
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners" one
needs to remove to make ActiveSync "forget" the previous partnership?

I *know* how to remove ActiveSync! But that's my point: One should NOT
have to remove and reinstall ActiveSync after one upgrades the PPC!
Instead it should suffice to recreate the (old or a new) partnership and
then simply reinstall all the programs listed under Tools => Add/Remove
Programs by just checking all the check boxes again.

I don't see why I *always* have to reinstall ActiveSync PLUS all the
programs that I had installed prior to upgrading again!

Michael, absolutely ****ed off :-(

Hi

When i upgrades the firmware on my device, or when ever a hard reset is
needed. I just delete the partnership in activesync and reconnect the pocket
pc to make a new one, i have never had the same trouble as you have, never
had to reinstall Activesync or go though registry entries what so ever...

might be something with your setup?

I agree: that's how it should be and that's what I first tried to do as
well, i.e. I deleted the old partnership. But when then trying to
recreate one I get this "Unrecoverable error. ...".

I tried several time since and sometimes I get the "Unrecoverable..."
immediately after clicking "Partnership: With this computer", sometimes
it gets one step further and pops up the next screen "This name is
already is use. Specify a different one", but no matter what I enter
here (the old name, or "foo" or "x" or whatever), the result is always
"Unrecoverable error. ..."

Maybe, but what??? Although I don't really think so, since I am
experiencing exactly this problem since several generations of PPCs and
ActiveSync: recreating a partnership with a previously known device
ALWAYS fails!
