Hi,

Have recently restored an SBS 2003 from backup after two drives failing. As
the customer had only one tape I had to restore from the previous night's
backup which must have had come corruption as the restore was not real
smooth. Have worked through most of the problems by re-applying fixed,
re-running Wizards etc.

However the one issue which I have at the moment is that when I try to start
the Task Scheduler service it fails and a whole bunch of other services
stop. Thought it might be a depenency issue but could not pinpoint one
service that was common across all the services that stopped. The following
services all stop (have included dependencies to make troubleshooting
easier) :

Service Dependencies
Automatic Updates None
Computer Browser Server, Workstation
Cryptographic Services RPC
Distributed Link Tracking Client RPC
Help and Support RPC
Logical Disk Manager Plug & Play, RPC
Performance Logs and Alerts None
Secondary Logon None
Server None
Shell Hardware Detection RPC
Windows Audio Plug and Play, RPC
Wireless Configuration RPC, NDIS usermode I/O Protocol
Workstation None

All of the above except for Performance Logs and Alert start fine
individually. I've set the Task Scheduler service to Manual start now but
would really like to get to the bottom of the problem. Also am having some
problems with the Backup Exec services which I suspect might be related butu
am working on that separately for now.

Event log entries when I try to start Task Scheduler:

Event ID Source Description:

7000 Service Control Manager The Windows Audio service failed to
start due to the following error: The pipe state is invalid.

Possibly RPC services failing. If RPC is dead, so is your server. I called
Microsoft about this once... Here is my post:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...7408ed63387198

Consider a reinstall of just the OS component and reapplying the service
pack.

Hi Darren,

Well, take a system state backup and a disk image backup first... But
honestly, I think this system would ordinarily be considered beyond repair,
so you do not have much to lose. It does seem to me like all that's broken
is your default security settings, which is why I pointed you to my article.
I think my theory is correct.

This is how I fixed a system once, although I should have simply taken the
system state backup and restored it. :-) The system in question was SBS.

These actions simply reset permissions to their proper levels and do not
replace files. The crux of the problem seems to be with the SIDs 5- that are
mentioned. According to
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;Q243330

SID: S-1-5-32-545
Name: Users
Description: A built-in group. After the initial installation of the
operating system, the only member is the Authenticated Users group. When a
computer joins a domain, the Domain Users group is added to the Users group
on the computer.

SID: S-1-5-32-560
Name: BUILTIN\Windows Authorization Access Group
Description: An alias. Members of this group have access to the computed
tokenGroupsGlobalAndUniversal attribute on User objects.

Thanks Leonid,

Have run the analysis and results as follows (just summary as log is quote
big). There were quite a few mismatch errors.

Is it safe to "Configure"? Assume this is a security policy template. Is
it suitable to apply this to SBS 2003?

Thanks

Darren
