I installed this update:
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885835)
Date last published: 12/14/2004

After I restarted Windows asked a password to login my account (I had no
password at all !). I had to recover the last working session (F8, etc...).

I put a password for my account. I installed the update again. The password
was not correct. win Changhed it!

Is it Windows XP quirky or should I change operating system?
BTW, any help is appreciated.

This sounds like it is unique to that computer.
Are you sure you saved after changing the password?
Did you try leaving the password blank?

It's not unique, I've got problems logging in after this update
Still don't know what to do, xp keeps trying to update the same updates on
top of each other once I manage to get in
Some boffin will sort something out I hope as a few people seem to be having
problems

Having the same problem, but CANNOT restore to previous working
configuration.

Any suggestions? I really don't want to have to do a full
re-install...

You now list another detail you missed on your first post.
You did not mention the same update kept reinstalling.
Try this:
