Is there any way to stop the 'you must restart your computer' prompt from
popping up in the middle of your screen after installing updates?

Not really, just understand that the update is not applied
until you reboot. This also allows the temp files and
registry to be set.

I use XP home (I think there is a solution for Pro).

I stopped the automatic restart but still get this very very very very (goes
on for ever) annoying dialogue box pop up about every ten mins. I just want
to get on with my work and restart when i choose. Microsoft need to sort this
out.

The only solution seems to be to stop the auto updates completely, or to use
Lynux Ridiculous.

Change the patches to "download and notify me" from auto updates. You
chose them to be downloaded.

And it's Linux not Lynux.

And they have a patch update mechanism as well.

I know this is an old post, but I have just bought a new laptop with Vista
and when it does the automatic update during the night, it also automatically
restarts my compuer. Any work I've left open or game I am in the middle of is
lost. Is there any way to keep the computer from restarting automatically
aside from choosing to stop the automatic update installer?

Change the patches to "download and notify me"

Go into Windows Update, and change it from automatic to "download and
notify".
