Hi. I was a happy user of MSN 7.5 until I was forced to upgrade to Windows
Live Messenger 8.1. However, with Live Messenger 8.1 I cannot log in, I keep
on getting error 80072efd.
I have followed all the steps suggested here and elsewhere (I think I have
visited thousands of blogs), even disabled my firewall, talked to my ISP,
restarted the router, etc etc etc. I even installed Live Messenger 8.5.
Nothing works.
Is there a way to return to use the old (but working!!) MSN 7.5?? (I have
tried to reinstall it, but at log in, it forces me to upgrade).
The beauty of GoogleTalk is that you don't get all this confussing mess.....
HELP!
Mauricio

Greetings Mauricio,

Are you using any third-party firewall software out of chance?

Regardless as a temporary measure, you can use the new MSN Messenger 7.0 if you prefer.

To do so, download from here:
http://microsoft.com/downloads/detai...4-9505f47bed45

Then to engage compatibility mode, go to the \Program files\MSN Messenger folder, right click
on the msnmsgr.exe file, choose Properties, then the Compatibility tab, choose Windows 2000,
click OK and then run Messenger as per normal.

Hello Jonathan,

I have the same frustration that Mauricion describes, after upgrading to 8.1
many computers in the company I work for, mine is one of the ones that is not
allowing me to sign in. I checked every recomendation regarding firewalls and
proxies but I was not able to solve the problem. I am now using the temporary
solution that you posted downloading the 7.0. Please keep me updated when you
find a solution so I can upgrade to 8.1 again.

Thank you,
Gustavo

Thanks Johathan, your recommendation worked. Now I can sign in with MSN 7.0.
But think for a moment: I started with 7.5 and now I can only use 7.0 Moral
of the story: this "upgrade" left me worse-off.
And some of my friends cannot run Windows Live either!!! There HAS to be sth
wrong here. How come Microsoft releases this thing and forces us to upgrade
when there is no way to make it run?????
Thanks again
Mauricio

Hello Jonathan,

Your recommendation is helpful as a temporary solution to the problem that
many users are experiencing. Since the upgrade to 8.1 is required due to a
security issue, I am concerned if 7.0 post the same problem with security. I
am now using 7.0, however, look forward to seeing error 80072efd resolved.
Please keep me posted when 8.1 and 8.5 are resolved and available for
download.

Thank you,

I am happy that finally I can have a temporary solution because the days
without msn is terrible.
I found this website
http://messenger-support.spaces.live...3F!11961.entry
And I tried to follow its instructions, installed fiddler2 on my computer, for
once,I logged into windows live messenger. However, after a while I got signed
out and cant return. The error code changed to 81000306.I found another link
says do some register work will fix the problem, and I did so:
regsvr32 Softpub.dll

regsvr32 Mssip32.dll

regsvr32 Initpki.dll

It worked again.I thought I found a way to fix the problem. And today is
Monday,I have 80072efd again.Fiddler2 didnt bring me much luck and
registering dlls didnt work either.

I hope my information can provide something useful for debug.
Look forward to using latest version.

Thanks.

Hello Jonathan,

I tried the temporary measure which you posted; on logging in to MSN
Messenger 7.0 today, it required that I upgrade to proceed any further.
After which, I am getting error 80072efd again.

Please let me know if this issue is being looked at.

Thank you,

Leigh

A required upgrade that forces people to use what is considered a less secure
method by the manufacturer as a temporary fix? If this were any other
business, they'd be sued for breach of contract.

I've had the same problem for three days. I do not want a temporary
solution. I want a solution. I had no problems with Live Messenger until
three days ago. No changes have been made to my system in over three weeks.
I have used Microsoft's malware remover and nothing can be found. In the
end, this is an obvious Microsoft product as noted by its functionality or
lack thereof.

Linux is looking better every day. And yes, I will relearn how to use an
operating system if I know it will work.
