Hello,

first of all many thanks to all the great people in this newsgroup for their
great assistance regarding this topic.!
However, all the suggestions and hints mentioned during the last week didn't
work for me (except doing a repair install which I'm not willing to do).

Therefore I'm getting slowly angry regarding an official statements from
MS!!! Is MS working on this topic? Did MS realize that there are many
customers affected? When can all the customers affected by this expect a
solution? I'm looking forward to getting an answer soon!!!!

Hi Robbi-
Can you get it to download at all?.... from a direct link?.........then
open/run it from its folder?
I think the core of this issue is that while some of us can (eventually)
DOWNLOAD updates we cannot get them to install themselves!
I am very confused by the multiplicity of 'fixes' for these problems and
hope against hope that MS come up with something that doesn't involve huge
amounts of convoluted hacking....my brain just can't cope!

yrs.,
still mystified,
flo

Hello,

one clarification: My problem is that my machine freezes as soon as I click
on "Express" or "Custom" Updates on the Windows Update Site.

I already tried to install the WGADiag2.exe but with no success!

Hi Robbi-
Sorry-I see... the 'freezing' is a problem I haven't come across yet!!
How does this stop you navigating straigt to the download link on the MS
website (Bypassing having to press 'custom'/'express and all that
jazz,)though?

Also...well-meaning MVPs keep pointing us to the WGADiag2.exe tool but I'm
not really sure what this does? It hasn't actually 'fixed' anything for
me....or is it just a reporting tool?

yrs boggled,
flo

Then you have another problem, _not_ the one that the latest version
of KB892130 won't install.

> I already tried to install the WGADiag2.exe but with no success!

That isn't intended to fix the issue you ran into, but the one
with failing installation of KB892130.

So, back to the roots:
What Windows version are you running? Windows XP (SP2)?

Is the BITS services up and runnig?
The same for the "Automatic Updates" *service*?
Check both via Start -> Run -> services.msc

You've tried deleting the Temporary Internet Files already?

Which programs are running in the background?

There does seem to be some confusion about which problem has been solved
by which method but to date I have not seen a solution for the 'freezing
on clicking' problem. as seen here
news://msnews.microsoft.com:119/4334...@microsoft.com

My computer locks up when clicking on express or custom from within
Microsoft update using IE6. Hitting Ctrl/Alt/Del brings up a black
screen and a reboot is the only choice.
I'm convinced that this has something to do with the new validation
method as it also occurs using Firefox on the Microsoft download site
when validation is required.
However this only happens on one machine out of a household total of five.
The machine in question has an AMD Athlon64 X2 Dual Core Processor
4400+ and all the others are Intel (Single core).

This problem has occurred with no other programs running and with
anti-virus and firewall shut down.
The BITS service is running. All cookies and temporary Internet files
deleted.

Hi,
I just tried to install the WGA Tool also. It downloaded but failed on the
install. When I tried to look at the report to see why it failed, the screen
froze. I rebooted and tried again (because I sometimes halt processes using
Task Manager). It failed in the same way. I then tried to do a problem
report - it really ticked me off that they wanted to gather data from my
machine - but eventually I said yes. It said 10 minutes with a 56k
connection. I have cable and it was going on 5 minutes so I canceled that
because I didn't have a clue what they were doing or looking at. I then
tried to uninstall the version of WGA that was on my machine. No way to do
that. Then I rebooted, turned off my firewall and tried again to install
WGA.

No Joy. Nothing works.

1. Please click the link below and download the tool.
http://www.ecs-safe.com/Reset_subinacl.zip

2. Save the file to your desktop.
3. Right click the Reset_subinacl.ZIP file and choose Extract
4. Follow the instructions and there will be two files (reset.cmd and
subinacl.exe)
5. Double click the reset.cmd file
6. You will see a DOS-like window processing.

(NOTE: It may take several minutes, please be patient. When it is finished,
you will be prompted that "Finished, press any key to continue")

After completing the above steps, please refer to the Windows Update website
to install the WGA toll again. If it still cannot be installed, let's move on
to the steps below to manually install it.

Step 2 Install the WGA engine manually
===========================
1. Download the ActiveX cab file from the following link and then save it to
the Desktop.
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...eckControl.cab

Open the downloaded cab file and we will find the following two files:

LegitCheckControl.dll
LegitCheckControl.inf

2. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "%windir%\system32" (without
quotations) and press Enter. Copy the LegitCheckControl.dll files into the
opened system32 folder.

3. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "REGSVR32 LegitCheckControl.dll"
(without the quotations) and press Enter. We will see a popup message stating
this process succeeded.

4. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "inf" (without quotations) and press
Enter. Copy the LegitCheckControl.inf file into the opened inf folder.

5. Right click on the copied LegitCheckControl.inf file in the inf folder,
and then choose Install. The WGA engine will be installed automatically.

After completing the above steps, please restart the computer and try to
validate Windows again.

Thanks Carey that was a lot more useful and informative than just
posting a couple of links. This WGA thing seems to cause total mayhem
I have spent days now installing if on failed PCs all over the place,
I have had no trouble getting it installed manually via the
SofrwareDistribution folder direct method using the full admin account
on the PCs I have done including my problem machine which failed as
expected.

This download but not install syndrome seems to me to have existed
long before WGA appeared, I have gone through it with a fine tooth
comb several times and tried every which way to fix it, nothing as yet
has cured it. I am not too bothered about it there are easy enough
workarounds but with recard to the new WGA update have been dealing
with lots of very seriously ****ed of business users in the last week
or so, there is a lot of anger in my little corner of the world
financial community and I bet I am not the only one facing this sort
of abuse on behalf of M$ who should IMO pay me for taking the crap and
fixing their rotten update software.

But thats by the by I will get paid a very nice cheque this month so
ta very much M$. however sorting these issues out properly may be a
better idea than falling out with people who can chuck M$ equipment
out of the tenth floor and get the Linux boys in. I dont care either
way its all work for me and my fellow IT freelancers but maybe you
should ask your M$ contacts to properly fix this updates / WGA
nonsense or bin it entirely

BTW your fix is far more elegant than mine and makes me look like a
proper hacker, I am a PC god now at various independant banks
brokerage houses and I got a lot more very lucrative work out of this
particular debacle to boot (pun unintensoinal)

Thanks again

8-)

Jonah
