Agere Modem Update Problem

What I have found at this site about the Windows Agere Modem download problem
has not helped me.

Unfortunately, I have to deal with a dial-up ISP. I was having trouble with
frequent disconnects and downloaded the Agere Modem update in the hope it
would solve my problem....well, after downloading it on Tues., 8/10, the
problem seemed to get worse--many more disconnects. I don't know if the
download made it worse and would like to remove it. In one message, I noted
a "Randy" said you could "hide" the download, but never did find an answer as
to how you 'hide' this download, or remove it. Can someone help me?

I have a Windows Agere Modem, works good.

I bought it from this site:
http://www.modemsite.com/56k/index.asp

You can download the latest driver for your modem from the site above. I
recall that they stressed the importance of NOT installing the driver
offered on the Windows Update site because it would cause some particular
problem. I would search the site for information on this and go from there

There is a forum there that is devoted to this modem. You will get good help
there.

Hope this helps,
Lilla

I poked around and found it for you...

http://www.modemsite.com/56k/latest.asp

Last updated 18-Aug-04
18-Aug-04 - Agere/LT-Win 8.31 Driver Info - Microsoft's Windows Update may
offer a driver update for Agere (formerly Lucent) "LT Win Modems" or Agere
Win Modems. The 8.31 driver was a special build for an Agere customer -
fixing a problem that is not likely to occur for nearly all LT modem users.
Because this driver did not undergo the testing normally done with general
driver releases, Agere is not making this a general release and it won't
appear at Modemsite. So, why is it on Windows Update? [When a driver is
submitted to Microsoft's WHQL for testing and driver signature, the
submitter indicates whether the driver is to be made available via Windows
update.] Should you upgrade to 8.31? [It's safer to stay with 8.30.]

Thank you very much, Lilla, for all the research you did for me and including
the URLs. I downgraded my modem speed per one of the suggestions and will
see if that stops the disconnects. I too wonder why this Agere Modem
download is on Microsoft's Windows Update site...they should know better than
to put it there before testing it with XP.
