Windows Update automatically changing user settings (again)

After Patch Tuesday this week (October 9), some Windows Vista users noticed
something strange: Windows Update had changed their Automatic Update
settings and rebooted their machines automatically without their consent.

The new report comes on the heels of recent complaints regarding Windows
Update performing stealth updates on users' machines who had turned off
Automatic Updates. (Microsoft officials subsequently explained that glitch
by saying that Windows Update requires self-updating before it is able to
recognize that new updates are available. Microsoft promised to be clearer,
in the future, in communicating this requirement.)
The AeroXperience Web site reported a new Windows Update problem on October
10, and was told by Microsoft that the company was aware of the issue and
were digging into what happened and why.

It's hard to say how many users have been affected by this week's Windows
Update problem. The patch-setting override seems to not have affected users
running the beta of Vista Service Pack (SP) 1, though that is not 100
percent verified, AeroXP members said. It's also not clear whether any
Windows XP users were affected and/or whether Vista users who obtain their
patches via Windows Software Update Services (WSUS) were hit with the same
problem.
AeroXP member Rafael Rivera explained the malfunction this way:

"Woke up this morning to a Windows log in screen? Swear you set that option
'Download updates but let me choose whether to install them'? We did too.
"In what appears to be a major glitch at Microsoft, Windows users are
trickling in from across the globe reporting that their machines downloaded
and installed updates they did not consent to. Rubbing salt in the wound,
machines were also automatically and forcefully rebooted at the default 3am
time frame."

AeroXP quotes a Microsoft spokesperson who said the company currently is
investigating the issue "regarding machines that are re-starting and having
automatic updating settings set back to 'Install Updates Automatically,'
despite having selected to be notified before installation of updates."
Users who've encountered the problem should contact Microsoft Support at
http://support.microsoft.com/security, Microsoft suggested.

Wow, not good. It doesn't seem to be impacting XP, though. It wouldn't
affect Frank though. If it reboots when he's either typing his garbage
here or when he's visiting his favorite porn site, no big deal.

i want to thank you for telling us about this..you did good..i for one have
all ways..worried about something like that.i have all ways told people not
to leave there computers on..i turn mind off..but some people leave them on
24/7

i think whats going on..is,this os is so defective..they are comeing up with
every fix and patch they can think of and they even come up with one to take
over our computers..that is bad..but i allso think.they are not trying to
hurt us..but they are just..going crazy trying to come up with all these
fixes..

they dont want to loose there asses on this vista.so they are trying to do
things..to make it work like its suposed to and to make us happy...they want
every one to install..al the patches and fixes..and its got to be done..so
let them have at it..

i think down the road,if they get enough fixes and patches and service
packs,,they should have all of that on a dvd and give us
replacement..dvd,s..and maybe we and vista will be at a point.that the mass
updateing..will be over with..we will have a full operating system..s was
promised..but was not delivered..to us

Tiber, I have XP and Vista on my Network. Both computers are set to notify me
of updates. Nothing changed with my settings on Update Day this month, or any
other month!

On a lighter note, you were mentioning "Restoration" in a post.
Have you tried "Undelete Plus+"? It seems to work pretty good.

I had hell to pay and this weeks updates blue screened me. It took
an hour to get things straightened around.

I've been using XP since it came out and an update never blue screened
me before.
