I too have had problems mine being Error number: 0x80072EE2 ,

Have tracked this through Admin tools - Event viewer and it comes up with 2
differant errors

Service Control Manager 7000
Service Control Manager 7023

Tracked these down on Microsoft and get this

Windows XP Professional Events and Errors Search Results

for "Service Control Manager 7000"

To view details, click on an ID number
ID Message
7000 The %1 service failed to start due to the following error:
%2.
7000 The %1 service failed to start due to the following error:

Windows XP Professional Events and Errors Search Results

for "Service Control Manager 7023"

There are 2 differant errors because I tried both Fast and Custom update
options .

Spoke to Microsoft UK who did not have clue they patched me through to US
who were just as clueless, seemed surprised when I told them that there were
probably 1000s of users with problems screaming blue murder all over the Net.

They have promised to review all posts on this forum and all others and post
a fix for this yet again untested Beta rubbish, the whole download engine is
corrupt !

RICK

The google post is just this same here, same threads,
problems, names, solutions.

To everyone: I have not tried this because I am away from
my computer but there is an "iuengine.dll" lib in the
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder. This lib is dated
2002 but if you replace the same lib (iuengine.dll) in the
System32 folder with this one (always make a copy of the
replaced one) some of the errors SHOULD vanish.

Repeat: I have not tried yet.
