All Microsoft updates fail

After a recent software error i needed to reinstall Windows XP. After the
inital install, I begin to use MS update, but shortly after i install IE7 i
can no longer use MS update. the files download but when installing it fails
without an error code.

Install XP with SP2 from CD
Install Symantec Endpoint Protection 11
Install wireless driver
Install MS update (over windows update) and Genuine advantage and other
items that are required to access MS update
Install SP3
Install all other critical updates (IE 7)
Install updates to IE 7

All further updates fail, and removing the last update, IE7 and Symantec do
nothing except stopping me to upgrading back to IE7.

I'm going to go and do a reinstall without symantec now, so with the
exception of the wireless drivers all the software will be MS, trying to
narrow down where the issue is. If anyone has come across the issue before or
knows of a fix i would most appreciate it.

Same here, brand new computer, installed XP SP2 oem dutch. I installed the
downloaded SP3. I then activated the XPm and started the windows update. I
installed IE 7 and the WGA validation tool. After the reboot i started
windows update again and selected the security update for IE 7.
After downloading i got an intallation error, no error code. Also the .NET
and WMP11 won´t install with windows update. I can install them manually but
the update for these programs also won´t install.

I formatted the harddrive and started all over and i got the same problem
all over.
Is this a new bug or what.

Try this....

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

(Try it even if you did a clean, not repair, installation.)
(Try it even if you performed some sort of restore - not repair install.)
(Try it even if you did an upgrade installation.)
(Try even if you think none of that fits...)

Do all suggested methods.

(Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and do a custom scan after each
method/reboot.)

Just for grins - try this:

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

(Try it even if you did a clean, not repair, installation.)

Shenan, It looks like this might be the fix. the first method seems to work
for me. I'll do a little more testing and hopefully be able to say for sure.
If this is the case some how you need to "Register the Wups2.dll file in
Windows" do we know why it's happening and also how widespread the problem
may be?

not to be fear mongering but if this a SP3 error that for some reason knocks
out MS updates it may not be noticed for a few days till the next batch of
updates need to be applied, however in our cases since were doing a fresh
install SP3 will hit the PC before other updates. Of course My guess that it
more likly to be a certain order of updates (SP3 before KB947864 is my
guess). Either way since it's very recreateable how would someone go about
notifying MS and getting them to look into it?

That did the trick !!
Reregistering the wups2.dll worked, after this the automatic updates and
windows update worked again.

I fairly certain it was not SP3 that did it - it was the part where you said
you re-installed Windows.

In which specific way did you install SP3, BTW?
