I've recently installed Windows Messenger Live 8 and I signed in and all of
my contacts were offline. I thought this was odd, so I signed onto
emessenger.net and saw that about 10 contacts were online. I've tried
uninstalling Windows Live Messenger but no change. I also got a new account,
becuase my friend can log into his account on my computer and his works fine,
it seems to be something wrong with my account, but the new account also had
the same problem.

And the most annoying thing is, I tried to reinstall MSN Messenger 7.5 and
just use that, but it come up with an error saying please visit
messenger.msn.com and download the latest version... THE LATEST VERSION
DOESN'T WORK!

There was a thread on about page 13 from someone who had the same problem
and a poster suggested to go to msngeeks.com and rebuild my contact list but
it changed nothing.

Please help someone!

This is most likely due to the .NET service being screwed up the past few
days. You can try to clear your contact cache by deleting the following
file:

C:\Documents and Settings\<<user>>\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN
Messenger\<<ID#>>/ListCache.dat

You can find your ID# by using this program:

Let me know if this works

I tried it, went to C:\Documents and Settings\<<user>>\Application
Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\... and there were about 30 different folders
all named with numbers like "0343830"... so i searched that folder and
deleted all the listcache.dat files. Then opened Windows Messenger but still
all contacts are offline.

Thanks for the suggestion. Any others?

I realised that I still had msn messenger 7.5 still installed on my computer,
so I began the process of uninstalling it only to encounter more problems.
First it couldn't access the msnmsgs.msi file... blah blah... so to cut a
long story short i used "Windows Install Clean Up" to uninstall the remains
of msn messenger after i deleted several folders, files and registry keys,
which I feel uncomfortable doing because you never know if you've gotten rid
of everything.

Anyway, once I had completely removed msn messenger and windows live
messenger, I installed Windows live messenger once again. But no change. All
contacts still show offline. Before I installed it though I created a restore
point so I just went back a few minutes and then installed msn messenger and
now I'm back to square one, with no windows live messenger but at least i can
talk to my friends.

The annoying thing is, I've had 4 friends all sign onto wiindows live
messenger today and all their accounts worked. Am I just cursed?

If anyone can shed some light onto my annoying situation then please do.
Otherwise i'll just plod along with msn messesnger.

I accidentaly pasted the wrong file path in my post, here is a e-mail I got
from the support team:

What I can do for you is provide you with a few steps and it is important
that you follow these steps carefully in the order shown to ensure a
resolution to your problem.

<<snip>>

- For Windows Live Messenger
a. Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is turned on:
i. Right-click "Start," and then click "Explore" to open Windows Explorer.
ii. On the "Tools" menu, click "Folder Options," and then click the "View"
tab.
iii. In the "Advanced settings" box, select "Show hidden files and folders"
under "Hidden files and folders."
iv. Click "OK" to close the window.

b. Locate the following folder, and then delete the contents of the folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR WINDOWS LOGON NAME]\Contacts\[YOUR MICROSOFT
PASSPORT NETWORK ADDRESS]

c. Locate the following folder, and then delete both folders that this
folder contains:
C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR WINDOWS LOGON NAME]\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\[YOUR PASSPORT
NETWORK ADDRESS]

5. Try to sign in to Messenger again.
