All (not just MS) Auto-update downloads stuck at 0%

I've looked all over the net for the answer to this problem, but no luck...

A few months ago, my McAfee Virusscan Online began to pop up its taskbar
icon to indicate that it was downloading an update, but it always stuck at
"0% downloaded". After a couple of minutes, the icon would disappear. Not a
major problem, because I can update manually. The same was also true of
Windows Update, which I had to do by visiting the site manually despite me
having everything set to automatically download the updates. This morning I
had notification of an update for the Sun Java VM, which similarly sat at 0%
before disappearing...

So... what service is common to all three of these update engines and how do
I get it working again? The problem remains even after manually downloading
and installing SP2.

I'll be very happy if somebody knows the answer!

Steve

Howdy Steve,
My AV is McAfee version 8. It's not the online version that you have (I think).
Mine has no problem doing its updates in auto mode.

Does this pc use the Windows firewall? or does it have a 3rd-party firewall? which one & what version?
We have all read of so many blockage issues with Norton Internet Security --- but that one & the others are curable by digging down into the product and doing the right "exclusion" or tweak.

If not firewall, it may be an issue of free space on HD....or something else.

Have you disabled any Windows services?
This is on XP SP2, right?

It's using the SP2 firewall now, but previously it wasn't using any firewall
(it's behind a router) and the problem was still there. It did previously
work in exactly the same configuration, so something else has changed -
undoubtedly something I did!

I've made sure that the services are all as default - no difference.

Yes, but it was previously working and then broken on SP1, so I don't think
that's an issue.
