All Office updates fail, all Windows XP updates succeed

With a month-old XP Media Center 2005 laptop, in Microsoft Update (set to
download automatically but to install on my command) 17 updates appeared; 10
were for XP and succeeded, 7 for Office or individual Office programs and
failed. This happened twice, and then again after newly downloading them from
Office Update. Any ideas?
