How are you going to get the right answer if we DON'T KNOW what programs you
have?

Run the Vista Upgrade Advisor..

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...deadvisor.mspx

Then check out software author websites for upgrades, patches etc..

Depends, most modern applications will work just fine on Windows Vista. But
there are a few things to take into consideration. 32 bit applications with
16 bit installers do not work on Vista x64 if you decide to go that path.
Overall, its best you contact the software developer or check the website to
find out about Vista compatibility, patches, updates or new releases.

There are work arounds for incompatible applications such as running in a
compatible version of Windows in Virtual PC 2007.
