All of a sudden I can't install xp pro updates???

For the past few weeks I'd been having problems installing downloaded
updates.

It was a real mixed bag of nutz. It was telling me it couldn't install
stuff, some of which really wasn't on my system and others, like ie7
which was already installed and usuable.

To whoever posted the Dial-A-Fix routine at
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix
my sincerest thanks goes out to you.

I ran the routine straight from the zip, checked only the updates
section and clicked GO. Problem solved.

Sorry you won't get to share in the $20 I sent them from my pay-pal
account but, if it's any consolation, you do have my sincerest
gratitude.

The $20 seemed easier considering my next step, if that hadn't worked,
was to do a clean install which, the last time I did one, took almost
two days to get my system set up the way it was prior to the problem.
And a few more days to, once again, get comfortable with my confidence
in my system.

Again, a big thanks.

Nothing a Google search wouldn't have solved, eh?

I personally have posted these answers MANY times over - as have many other
people... However - in the hopes others might search before getting overly
frustrated...

First thing to try:
As many will tell you - ignore the title and symptoms listed in the article
referred to. Do method 1 and 2 and see if it fixes your issue whether or
not you repaired anything.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
Try method 1 and try to update*.
If fails - try method 2 and try to update*.

*try to update:
- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
- If it asks you to install anything before you see a selection of "Custom"
or "Express" - do so.
- Once you see the "Custom" or "Express" selection, choose "Custom".
- Scan for updates.
- When it lists what it finds - install the critical ones.
- You are generally safe doing the Optional Software Updates. I suggest
avoiding the Optional Hardware Updates completely.

Second thing to try:
http://www.codeplex.com/aureset

Third thing to try:
Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix:
- Windows Installer
- Windows Update
- All the Registration Center options.

Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot will be needed.

- Download/Install Windows Update v3.
http://download.windowsupdate.com/wi...gent30-x86.exe
(You *may* need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce"
right after the reboot - immediately after logging in.)

- Reboot.
- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates.

Usually - method one from the first suggestion fixes the issue.
Sometimes they have to proceed to method two from the first suggestion.

Less seldom - but it does happen - only the tool from the second suggestion
will work - although the first suggestion is contained within the second in
many ways (as well as some of the third.)

And the third suggestion is there because before there was a suggestion (1)
and a suggestion (2) - the third was the best bet and worked in most cases.

Thanks, Shenan. Method 1 worked for me.

I had a brand new re-wiped HD with XP Pro. Applied SP3 (from previous
download - I apply SPs before connecting to internet ) and ran Windows
Updates. First I could not get WPA installed. I did a manual DL and
install. Then I could not get ANY Windows Updates install.

I did the regsvr32 bit and I'm now the proud owner of the latest 10 updates
and about to reboot to have them take effect. I hope this goes well.

This is not *caused* by installing SP3 - for not everyone who installs SP3
will have this issue - although it is known to happen when __some__ install
SP3.

If you reboot right before installing SP3 and follow other best practices
for installing Service Packs and updates/patches (as well as just general
good computing practices) - this will not happen.

As for what you were doing - if you are referencing "Method 1" of a
particulat Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - you probably would have solved
your issue with Method 2 or one of the other solutions given elsewhere in
this conversation.

For completeness sake and hopes that others searching for help with a
similar issue might come across this before asking the question for the
umpteenth time...

I personally have posted these answers MANY times over - as have many other
