All of a sudden - I have no sound

Not sure what has happened but I have no sound. I've run all the tests
that "Help/Troubleshooting" - sound...has mentioned but still nothing. I do
have a sound card which is recognized and is working. When I test the system
as instructed, all is ok (I can produce sound out of the speakers).

No new programs installed before this problem started. I am running Vista
Home Premium on a 6 month old E-Machines computer.

A few days ago had a problem with Windows Mail not deleting emails but the
system has mysteriously fixed itself.

To be clear, you're saying that the test does correctly produce sound,
correct?

Also, when does it not produce sound? For example, what happens if you open
a media file in Windows Media Player?

First, thanks for such a speedy reply......

1. Yes, the test does correctly produce sound.

2. I'm not much of a media person other than the usual things such as what
you might receive via web links. I don't download music, etc ( just to give
you a knowledge basis). Anyway, I opened the MS media music sample and there
was no sound. However, I did have a 'visual' of the sound which was playing
if that's any help.

Tom,

Okay, I guess my next question (although silly) is whether you have the
logical volume of your computer turned up via the little speaker icon in the
bottom-right corner of the Notification Area. Also, ensure that it is not
altogether muted (indicated by a red circle with a line through it, like a
no-smoking sign).

If it is, make sure that both the device and the applications have the
volume turned up:
1.) Right-click the speaker icon.
2.) Click "Open Volume Mixer."
3.) Make sure that the left "Device" volume is turned up (and not muted).
4.) Make sure that the volume for the application you are using is turned up
(and not muted).

Check all this.

I think I have found the problem and fixed it too !! Better luck than
good management though

After reading Jason and Cal's messages and browsing around the Speaker icon
some more, actually right clicking it and opening the 'sound' tab, it dawned
on me that there were 2 media programs and I wondered what would happen if I
switched the default. So I tried making the 'other one as the default and I
now have my sound back.

The one I'm now using as the default is: Speaker- "High Definition Audio
Device". The other one (icon with description) has disappeared but as best
as I can remember, it was "SB Live" with its own little icon. I tried doing
a search on my computer for 'SB Live' but came up empty. Then I checked for
any recent MS upgrades, and lo and behold I see where MS sent me an upgrade
on July 4th which fits right into the timeframe when we lost our sound. So I
will speculate that that was the reason for my problem...my speculation
only!!

Anyway, I rebooted the computer and I now have sound.

The MS update, which I mentioned in my last posting, as being sent to my
computer from Microsoft, had a description as follows;

" Cumulative update for media center for windows Vista (KB935652) dated
7/04/07.
