i have just re-installed xp on a new hard drive on my computer, installation
went well and all updates setup and installed just fine only a few days ago.
but today windows update was doing its usual set daily task when it seemed to
go incredibly wrong. My pc went very slow and now keeps connecting to update
saying i have to download 90 updates. The downloads complete ok but then ALL
fail to install, i followed the services.msc & BITS guide after recieving
error message 0x8024001E but this has achieved nothing and there is NOT any
more info anywhere on microsoft in reference to this problem, can anyone help?

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

(Try it even if you did a clean, not repair, installation.)
(Try it even if you performed some sort of restore - not repair install.)
(Try it even if you did an upgrade installation.)

Do all suggested methods.

heads up guys, I just spent the best part of 4 days trying to install
updates, I found that certain dll files were missing,
Resolutions
1. Re-register the Windows Update DLL with the commands below
Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

Attempt to run Windows Update

This worked for me so give it a try, updates (99 in all) are now
downloading, but create a restore point first, or back up your registry, to
be honest , I never do, if all fails I just clean install my system..
hope this helps you all

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.
