Where are all the Updates stored?

Hi,

Prior versions of Windows updates were stored just off the %SystemRoot% in
subdirectories that begin with "KB". Some other updates would be stored in
the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder.

I normally delete these areas after I've accepted the patches are okay. I
no longer see the "KB" subdirectories under the %SystemRoot%, nor do I find
the "KB*.log" files in the the %SystemRoot%. Are these now stored elsewhere
in Vista? And like in XP, can they be safely deleted after some time has
passed?

Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features > under 'Tasks' click View
Installed Updates.

Dear Bob,

Thanks for your posting here, and also thank Andre for your assistance.

Windows Vista use a new mechanism called Servicing to manage operating
system update, rather than the methods used by Windows XP.

The Servicing stages the update packages under the %windir%\winsxs folder
before they are really installed into system. Under the
%windir%\winsxs\manifests directory, the Servicing also store the necessary
.manifest files to define what update package needs to be installed and
where it needs to be installed.

When system start to install some update, the Servicing will locate the
update package under %windir%\winsxs directory and determine how to install
it by reading the corresponding file installed in %windir%\winsxs\manifests
directory, and then Servicing will create a link from update package under
%windir%\winsxs directory to system32 to accomplish installation. If we
delete the files under %windir%\winsxs directory, it may damage this link.

Based on this mechanism, I do not suggest you delete these files under
%windir%\winsxs directory.

In XP, I was able to delete all the downloaded patches after they were
installed. But in Vista, I guess I'll have to accept the hard drive will
one day run out of space as there is no practical way to prevent the WinSxS
folder from growing and growing with all the downloaded patches that I no
longer need.

This is a little-known but very major problem with Vista. It's why the
Windows folder can grow to be 10GB+ and a lot more over time. Couple that
with System Restore and Shadow Copies (which works well) and that 60gb
laptop drive WILL run out of room in the blink of an eye. I like Vista a
lot.... but some of the things just weren't throught-through.

capacity drives for desktop machines have been available for awhile.

Tho the price point for 7200RPM has been a bit high for such capacities.
