ALL USB devices just stopped working

I am running Vista Business.

I left my computer running for ten minutes - came back to it and found that
all the USB devices had stopped working - not even the mouse worked!

After a lot of reboots and system restores, I have managed to get some
devices working (keyboard, mouse, USB key, webcam) but there are still
several that do not.

I have tried reinstalling the drivers for some of the items that do not
work - but this does not appear to be a driver problem. I have also tried
swapping devices to determine if there is a USB hardware failure - but there
is not.

Any other suggestions?

This may work :
1. Unplug all USB devices except the mouse and keyboard (if you have them)
then boot Windows in Safe Mode (tap F8 at switch on).
2. Right-click Computer > Properties > Device Manager and look for
everything in the Universal Serial Bus Controllers category then right-click
and Uninstall them starting from the bottom (last one).
3. Restart the system normally and Windows will then re-install them. Plug
in your USB device(s) and it/they should be recognised properly. Note that
some drivers may be needed if Windows can't find them.

Sounds like you have a lot of USB devices. I would try a powered hub if you
are not using one. It could be that powerwise you set up is borderline.

I tried this - not the problem.

Fiddling around in Device Manager, it seems that all the drivers are up to
date.

However, it just seems that some USB ports are not working, and the
peripherals that are plugged into them are not showing as connected.

Are there errors in the System Event Log?

I have managed to get some more peripherals working - I think the problem is
caused by the USB controller itself. How can I reinstall the drivers for the
USB controller?

Windoze XP was notorious for losing contact with its USB ports. Guess this
feature has been carried over to Vista. I have my doubts whether Microsof~1
will ever get this right.

Cheers.
