All XP updates failing -- downloaded but won't install

Hi all,

I usually get the yellow-shield icon when new updates are available. (Mine
are set to install automatically, but the laptop isn't always on.)

MS Update shows there are 14 critical updates for my system. It indicates
they have already downloaded, but when I click Install Updates, it says after
a few moments that 14 updates have failed. It shows the generic "A problem
with your computer is preventing etc." There is no error number or
identifier. I've tried rebooting, renaming the Catroot2 folder, every
solution I could find. Nothing works.

I think I read that MS was having a problem with Windows Updates recently.
But as mine seem to have downloaded, would that still cause them to fail?

Any insight will be much appreciated, as to why the yellow notification
shield is not appearing and why all the updates are failing.

Thank you!

I have the identical problem.

The knowledge base indicates that it is due to a registry cleanup which has
removed an essential key. This is possible because I use RegCure regularly.

The recommended MS solution is to repair the registry using regedit. They
warn that it is risky and that a backup of the registry should be made
beforehand. A detailed procedure is to be found on the www.microsoft.com site
but I cannot find it again.

However I do not want to risk even worse problems by doing the job myself
and would like to know whether a re-insallation of Office 2003 would do the
job.

Hah! I bought into regcure last week and have been having the same problem.

Earlier today, I unistalled nad reinstalled Office and SOME fo the updates
have instaled succesfuly. However, two Office 2003 security updates REFUSE to
install.

I blame Regcure for not warning users and I blame Microsoft for buillding a
crap product which requires users to use Regcure becuase things ditteriorate
so much after a while... My laptop is only 8 months old and I am VERY
protective of what i install on it but still, things crap out.

I stopped payment on my credit card for Regcure becuase its made life worse
and their tech support wont even respond.

*uck! i shoulda bough an apple!
