Grenou, I would very much appreciate the name of the server for the
alt.windows7.general newsgroup. I already subscribe to
news.microsoft.com and msnews.microsoft.com but could not find the
alt.windows7.general newsgroup on either of these servers. Thanks for any
help, Sam.

If you're not in the UK, this isn't much help:

news.btinternet.com

which through is my ISP BT Internet.

It's alt.windows7.general

Not
alt.windows7.general newsgroup.

Hi, Sam.

Microsoft hosts over 2,000 newsgroups here on its public news server. But
this is only a small part of Usenet, which offers well over 100,000
newsgroups, hosted by many different servers around the world. Each server
may "mirror" newsgroups posted on other servers, in addition to its own
hosted groups. (The Microsoft server does not mirror others.) I don't know
which news server is actually the host for the alt.windows7.general
newsgroup - but I don’t need to know because that newsgroup is mirrored on
the news server provided by my ISP and included in my monthly subscription
fee. My ISP's News Account is news.grandecom.net - but that won't do you
much good because you don't use Grande Communication as your ISP.

Up until a year or so ago, ISPs typically included a news server in their
Internet "bundle". Now, many do longer do that, partly because of fears of
litigation. Others still carry many Usenet newsgroups, but have dropped the
alt.* groups. You will have to ask your own ISP (att.net?) if a news server
is included for the monthly fee that you pay and, if so, what the server's
address is. Once connected to a server, you can click "Newsgroups" and type
"win 7" into the search box to see if that NG is carried by that server.

If your ISP does not provide a news server, there are thousands available,
many of them free. When I search for "free news server", Google and Bing
each get well over 100,000 hits.

Sad to say, though, some of the same inconsiderate trolls who have tried to
ruin these MS NGs have already found that Usenet group. :>(

Microsoft news servers only carry Microsoft newsgroups.
If you need general Usenet access you can get a free account here:

Many thanks for all of your replies. Was able to get the server Aioe.org
USENET Server to work. Thanks again, Sam.

HI, Sam.

You're welcome - and thanks for the feedback.

One thing I forgot to mention: While Microsoft does not mirror other NGs,
many other servers DO mirror some or all of the Microsoft NGs. Trouble is,
the process of relaying messages to and from the MS server often results in
messages that are out of sequence or delayed - or just lost. So it's best
to continue to get these MS groups from msnews.microsoft.com .

See you at alt.windows7.general ;<)
