If you are having problems with Win Update and WGA issues and/or you
wish to remove WGA totally and use alternate sources for windows
updates have a look at this

http://windowssecrets.com/comp/060713/

These guys are very reputable and used by corporations world wide to
avoid Windows updates which have been known to cause the odd problem
8-).

The version recommended is free for 1 to 10 PCs for a year by which
time there will be a free version for home use in any case.

Check it out.

Used on my test box, needed some tweaking and not hugely user friendly
but there is a good tutorial / explanation on the link.

Oh and subscribe to the newsletter, its very interesting.

For $25 per PC and a minimum of $125 for the service, the user
might find it worthwhile to visit the Microsoft download center
and spend an hour or so (via broadband) doing a personal download.
Other alternatives include being part of an academic center and
getting faculty/staff IT support and assistance or a member of a
computer club or even knowing of a free website, such as Kurt's
http://www.microscum.com/ or other reputable ones that have made
such compilations of the Windows XP patches.

But if one does not have access to resources like these, this
suggestion works. The rationale: Just how long would it take to
re-install XP in order to eradicate WGA(N) and how much is one's
time worth?

That was the situation last month, now they are making it free for
home users 1-10 PCs read the newsletter on the link a bit deeper. Its
not too obvious where to find the right software but the info is
there.

The normal service is expensive but there is a service with
Antispyware included (which can be disabled) for home / small business
users with 1 to 10 PCs, which will run on a stand alone machine, no
agents, or server required and is free for 12 months.

Getting WGA out totally including the Notify Tray spyware does not
involve re-installing windows, its not that difficult, google it. Even
MSFT themselves have provided a KB article on how to do it.
