I've been using shavlik.com to get my Windows & Office updates. So
far, so good. I really like that it's free and I don't have to
install the WGA first.

Have others tried it? How's it going?

And just WHY would you want to use a non-MS site to update your MS Operating
System?

Why not? Shavlik is a great company with good update solutions. I
object on principle to Microsoft's tactic of forcing users to download
WGA, and presuming all users are thieves until they prove otherwise.
Plus, I've had one computer that just would not validate through WGA.
And before you start the accusations, YES, I am using valid
software and have a valid license. So don't go there.

Um, if you use Auto Update, you don't need to install one single flavor
of WGA. I set it to download but let me decide what and when to install
so I can review the updates before installing them.

Oh, man,
I would not use auto update if you paid me! There are just
too many patches that can wreck my computer. After being a victim of
bad patches twice, I've taken a cautious approach. I guess auto
update if okay for people who have an extra computer to use, or who
don't know how to manually update. But for most of us, it's a bad,
bad idea.

Shavlik.com provides a better updating option, IMHO. You
still have to make sure you don't apply any bad patches, though.
Always good to read the newsgroups beforehand.

I've never, ever had one problem with any updates on three machines with
XP and on one machine that went from 95 to Me. Besides, I said set it to
download but let *me* decide what and when to install. I didn't
recommend letting Windows install them automatically without user
intervention. I recommend that you disable your AV before installing
*anything* which means that user intervention is essential. I also
recommend that you do a clean up/chkdsk/defrag before installing
anything and do it again after the installation is done.
