Do you have Outlook Express now?
Outlook Express will use pop3 to access a Hotmail account. No applications
are necessary.

Hey folks, can someone recommend me a 'mail client' application that will
work with my free hotmail live account in any of pop3 or imap protocol,..
besides Windows Live Mail?... I can't use this application because it's
minimal requirements are twice the RAM and a faster processor than what I
have on my old box... I've tried some 6-7 applications that should
supposedly make Outlook Express access my hotmail free account but none have
worked, so I hope someone has solved this little problem. Thing is, I could
cancel that account and move on to another mail provider but I've had this
account for a long time and all my contacts mail me there. So is there an
easyer way of getting this small problem solved?

Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

Incidentally, your time zone setting is off by a couple of hours.

MS Outlook Express accessed 'smtp.live.com' and 'pop3.live.com' just fine on
my Windows XP MCE 2005; SP3 computer (since been upgraded to Windows 7 Home
Premium x64).

Mozilla Thunderbird accesses 'smtp.live.com' and 'pop3.live.com' just fine
(including Windows 7 Home Premium x64).

Windows Live Hotmail does not offer IMAP access at this time, and POP3 does
not work in the same fashion as either IMAP, or HTTPMail.

You need the authentication settings to be set correctly.

Http access using Outlook Express ended on September 1.

You can use http access with Windows Live Mail.
Tools, Accounts, Add, E-mail account, enter your full email address,
password, and display name.

Ron, thanks for answering.. yes I do have Outlook Express on Windows XP Pro
but for some reason I can't get it to access my hotmail account, I've tried
every instruction I've found on the net included the detailed instructions
in Live Help.. I followed the exact settings but for some reason I can't get
it to connect. I got different error messages because of the different
settings I tried but the most persistent message says "authentication
failed" when I know I have the exact and reccommended settings and correct
password. When I click on synchronize account or reset list, it says
connecting but a second later it connection rejected, password rejected,
etc. though I've made sure I have the correct settings... I've even created
the account several times and used different identities but it's all the
same.

This for example, is the latest hotmail server response:
"There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was
rejected. Account: 'pop3.live.com', Server: 'pop3.live.com', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR authentication failed', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes,
Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92"

Apparently my passoword is not correct, but I can access it through the web
browser. After trying for two days to connect with Outlook Express and
getting the password rejected message, I changed it but this is the second
day with the new password and nothing. I know it sometimes takes a day or
two for a new password to be accepted through a mail client, but enough time
has passed by now and still nothing.

Due to the the failed attempts I thought free pop3 access had deffinetly
ended last Sept 1st as it was notified by hotmail in last June.. but was
still hoping this time they would also give us more time like they did last
year, but apparently not...

I'm getting to think it may be country related (my country is Mexico).. I
read this today in some website where the guy said that if you're in a
country where pop3 access isn't effective, that you can overcome it if you
change your country to one where it's in effect for free like the UK for
example, so I changed my country to UK and nothing... I'm getting convinced
this is the problem because I installed Windows Live Mail and I'm getting
the same result. Guess I'll have to move everything to my gmail account and
with IMAP even.... But in any case I'm getting the same result with any
other mail client... I've tried with Thunderbird, SeaMonkey Mail, Spicebird
from Mozilla, also tried IncrediMail, POP Peeper which would supposedly
work... in all, I may have tried some 9-10 mail clients and it now looks
like it won't happen.

I've tried with Thunderbird, SeaMonkey Mail, Spicebird from Mozilla (new &
nice substitute to Thunderbird or any other mail client), but nothing...
thanks for responding.

Just wondering...if you go into the settings of your Hotmail
account in OE...on the Servers tab...do you have a check
in the box, "My Server Requires Authentication"?

For WLM the minimum RAM requirement for Windows XP is only 128 MB.
The minimum Processor requirement is only 800 MHz.

Surely you have at least that much on your old box.

For OE the system requirements are even less.
32 MB of RAM and 486/66 MHz processor.
