Always Showing I have to Update Again

Hello everyone and thank you for taking your time to try to help me. For some
strange reason, my windows updates shows an icon in the system tray saying
that I need to update. If I do the update, then about 2-3 minutes later the
icon reappears and shows the same update again to install. I've tried to
search, but I can't find anything.

I am running Windows 2000 and I tried to find the update in my Add/Remove
programs to get rid of it, but it wasn't even there. For some reason it
doesn't even install it!

This is the update that is always reappearing and won't let me install:

Security Update For Microsoft Data Access Components (KB832483)

It's very weird and I hope I can solve it. Thank you.

sabster,

According to:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS04-003.mspx

> The same update applies to all these versions of MDAC

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

> • Microsoft Data Access Components 2.5 (included with Microsoft Windows 2000)
> • Microsoft Data Access Components 2.6 (included with Microsoft SQL Server 2000)

> • Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 (included with Microsoft Windows Server 2003)

Download the update from the above link. Close Internet Explorer (or
whichever browser you use), then install the update.

From : http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS04-003.mspx
Under the General Information heading, click the plus sign next to
Security Update Information
Ditto for Microsoft Data Access Components (all versions).

KB817787 is included in Service Pack 2. It would behoove you to get SP2
installed since support for SP1 ends this October :
From : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

Suggest you either order the CD (Free with a small postage charge) :
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx
or download the full SP2 package :

Thank you for taking time to try to answer my question, but your solution
didn't work. I downloaded the update and closed everything. I even restarted
the computer to try the file again.

This is the error I get:
"Target file is already at higher version. For Details see DaHotgix.log."

Then after I hit ok, I get this error:
"An error occured during setup.
For more information you can look at the log file: C:/WINNT/dahotfix.log.
You may need to contact your proudct support representative."

After I hit OK, it closes.

Definetly strange, huh?

I appear to be having a similar, if not the same, problem. Here is the

You're not the only experiencing this issue. Check the dahotfix.log to
see if it matches these entries :

Strongly suggest you contact MS via email :
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...spx?gprid=6527
Apparently, there is still an issue with this Security update.

OR, download the MDAC Utility: Component Checker :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

" The tool is designed to help you determine installed version
information and diagnose installation issues with the Microsoft Data
Access Components (MDAC)"

If the Component Checker shows the version of MDAC as damaged, we can
attempt to reinstall it.

That's pretty clear, isn't it? Somehow you already have a version of
a module which this update wants to install which supersedes the version
that it wants to install. Therefore, it won't install it.

Try to find out where you got the version that you have?
E.g. search your harddrive (including hidden files and folders)
for all instances of odbc32.dll

Tip: if you have the Windows Resource Kit for your OS or even just
your OS Support Tools package installed you may find that you have
a tool called filever.exe installed. Using that tool from a cmd window
may give a better presentation of the state of this module on your system.

One likely possibility is that besides in the usual operational directories
you will find it in some uninstall directories or other directories associated
with another update.

You need information such as that in order to decide what you can do
about resolving the discrepancy--e.g. perhaps uninstall whatever it is
which gave you the superseding version (which may be associated with
a less critical update and hence may not have been considered by the
update you are trying to install, etc.)

Hmm... or not.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS06-014.mspx

(MSN search for
odbc32 "3.520.6306.0"
)

That's 911562 and it's rated critical; so clearly that one would
properly supersede KB832483 (the one that OP is trying to install.)

Ok. So my next guess would be that there is some other module
contained in KB832483 which has been regressed from what
it would have installed and thus KB832483 is deemed necessary
to be reinstalled but it can't be reinstalled because some of the
other modules it contains (e.g. odbc32.dll) already supersede
the one which is being installed and thus prevent that regressed
module from being restored by that update.

The trick will be figuring out which module(s) are causing the
update to be reapplied. Perhaps this is a good occasion to
try using verbose mode logging? E.g. if WindowsUpdate.log
doesn't show you why KB832483 is being installed using just
ordinary logging, extra logging may provide more clues.
(ref. KB902093)

Alternatively you may be able to deduce the problem module(s)
by using the manifest contained in

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS04-003.mspx

Hmm... that lists the same few modules multiple times,
apparently dependent on the level of MDAC that you have installed.
