after trying many of the solutions to the update problem, I came across one
that starts with "Go to Manage Add-Ons and make sure that "WUWebControlClass
is set to 'Enable' " okay, this is understandable, but when i go to the
Add-Ons, this does not appear there at all. can someone explain in layman's
terms, how to get this in there and would this be one of the reason my
update does not work?

Try this instead: Bring up Windows Explorer (or click on My Computer from your desktop). Then go to C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files. You should see WUWebControlClass.

Look for file WindowsUpdate.log in your C:\Windows folder ( or it may be C:\WINNT on your system).

Use Notepad or Wordpad to open & view contents. Scan down to the very bottom. Copy the set of lines for that last session-date & paste back into a reply in here.

Bring up Windows Explorer, C:\WINDOWS\Dowloaded Program Files - WUWebControl
Class - IS NOT THERE

Look for file WindowsUpdate.log - NOT THERE but found C:\WINNT opened it and
this is the only thing that was there:

2004-12-09 15:32:10 21:32:10 Success IUCTL Starting
2004-12-09 15:32:10 21:32:10 Success IUCTL Shutting down
2005-01-28 12:26:15 19:26:15 Success IUCTL Starting
2005-01-28 12:26:15 19:26:15 Success IUCTL Shutting down

is this what i was looking for?

Yes. We now know your Windows folder is WINNT.
Go to C:\WINNT\Downloaded Program Files.
You should see WUWebControlClass. Highlight it by pointing the mouse right on the filename. It should popup with its Version number.

As to the log--- Was that all it had? Did you scroll all the way down. (I'm afraid that i-s what you mean)

If that is all, it means your pc's last attempt to Win Updates was on January 28.

have tried to go into C:\WINNT\Downloaded Program Files - i get error
messages:

trying through Run: - "C:\WINNT refers to a location tht is unavailable. It
could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make
sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the
Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located,
the information might have been moved to a different location."

trying through Search: - "WINNT\" is not a valid folder.

trying through Manage Add-Ons again: - nothing under "Add-ons currently
loaded in Internet Explorer"
but under "Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer" i find a
listing of:-
WUWeb Control Class - Microsoft Windows Publisher - Enabled - Active X
Control - file Wuweb

did search for wuweb and found 3 listings:-
wuweb.dll system 32 - v 5.4.3790.2182
wuweb.dll Service Pack files\i386 - v 5.4.3790.2180
wuweb.dll dll cache - v 5.4.3790.2182

does that make sense, i have really have no idea what i am doing.... have
WinXP SP2 home...

as to the log, yes, that is all that was in there... were there any
critical updates for march???
