Today I tried running the windows update and it is telling
me that I must have all these other crappy services
running. But I do not want automatic updates, or BITS, or
other stuff that has nothing to do with updating my system
running. Does anyone know how to get around this or
should I just switch to Linux.

I had my doubts about buying my most recent computer (only a month ago) and
running a Windows OS. I am now beating myself for not listening to my
intuition. After this Microsoft fiasco I can say with absolute certainty I
will *NEVER* have a Microsoft OS on any future computers. Unix, here I come!

Windows Update site needs the BITS service in order to download the patches
in a restartable manner. Basically if your download gets interrupted by any
means (machine is powered off, internet connection gets lost) the next time
you go back to the Windows Update site and select the same patch for download
and install, it will continue the download from where it left.
In a similar manner the Automatic Update (if such configured) uses the BITS
service to perform a background download of applicable updates when machine
has connectivity to Internet. This would allow you to have the updates
downloaded over a period of time even if you are connected to the Internet
intermitently.

I'm looking for a tweak to keep update disabled too. I can understand this
for newbies and I can understand it being default but for experienced users
who don't want a service running all the time, give us a break! I see I can
easily enable it, scan for updates and then disable it again but that's a bit
of a pain. I'm probably going to try Service Pack 2 this weekend after I
image my hard drive... that way if I don't like it I'll just reimage it back
to SP1 (using drive image pro). I always kept automatic update disabled and
checked for updates at around once a week, manually. I really prefer to keep
it that way.
