animate the dialup icon?

I can right-click and set it to animate, but that never actually does
anything. Is it possible that there is a windows update that might fix
this? I only have installed critical updates - how would I search if a
minor update like that exists?

Well it does here, the light on the little LCD goes on and off in the
notification area.

Yes, and it's a rather useless indication of traffic.

The icon in XP did a decent job of indicating inbound
and outbound traffic.

I would agree, but still has some purpose in indicating activity, my
recommendation is to actually click the Network icon in Notification Area >
click Network and Sharing Center > click View Connection Status to get some
real idea of whats going on with connection speed and data bytes sent.

for dialup? I wonder why yours is different. I've found more than a few
posts (including from this very group) describing what I have described,
like here:

plus on web forums, the same problem. Yours is the first time I've seen
somebody say that theirs works on dialup.
