Animated smilie problems in Live Messenger

Hi,

I just switched to Vista and now have Live Messenger 8.1. I've noticed that
many (but not all) animated smilies friends and I had no longer display. I
get a white box. I can click on it and highlight it, so I know the smilie is
there, but it won't display.

I have a couple of graphics programs (JASC Animation Shop and Macromedia
Fireworks), but neither will save an animated .gif file that Live Messenger
will display properly.

What settings do I need to use?
