Annoying blue screen after XP loads

When I bought my computer (Pentium 4, 2 GHz, 40 Gb hard drive)
with Windows XP, everything was fine.
After a few months a problem came up:
After the logo of Windows XP, a blue screen appears with the message:

Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot open volume for direct access.
Windows has finished checking the disk.
…

and then continues in the Welcome screen.
What can I do to make this annoying message disappear?

Go to the website of your hard drive manufacturer and get their hard drive
diagnostics to verify the integrity of the hard drive
