Every second or so my disk access light on the pc flashes - Windows XP
Premium SP1. I have tried every tool I can think of to try and find out
why but I am at a loss. This is my fourth install and on the first 2
this didnt happen. I have switched off everything I can think of that
may be causing this (prefetch, defender, indexing etc) bit it still goes
on. Is there any way I can track down what is happening? Vista was
installed 7 days ago.

Process monitor can show all disk activity.

You won't find the reason for that flash with process monitor.

Had you not said that it didn't happen previously I would have suggested
a 'hardware' effect. That light is not always just a disk access light
but can be a bus activity light, such as checks for the insertion of a
CD/DVD. Mine blips away at one a second continuously with no disk
transfers. Mind I'm not annoyed as I can't see it.

I can't find a reason to flash the monitor. I wonder if the neighbor is
looking through the window. Maybe I will flash her.

I have been pulling my hair out over this for the past two weeks. I
just put together a new system with an i7, x58 mb with a SATA
DVD-ROM and a SATA DVD-RW, using a RAID 0. This board has neither a
floppy port nor a PATA port so I have to use all SATA drives. This
could be a firmware problem or a windows driver problem. I do no
that if I disable them in device manager the blinking stops.
Sometimes it will stop if I just open the drive drawer and close it
again. I had this problem a few years ago with a lite-on CD-RW. I
shelved it and bought a Plextor. With all I have been going through
with this, I am about to pay twice the price for a plextor.

Hi--

I'm not sure if it's both Frank and philmrs. who are having the problem, but
try this:

Rt. click the drive's icon in Computer>take ck out of the box that says
"Allow files on this drive to have contesnts indexed in addition to file
properties."

Good luck,

CH
