Annoying feature of a recent Windows XP update

I had my PC set for automatic download and install of Windows XP updates. At
some point on 6/13/07, while I was not at home, my PC had received and
installed an update, and I was notified that this had been done. Ever since
that update, if my screensaver has activated, when I return to my PC, it
displays the Windows Log In screen and I have to re-enter my password in
order to conitue using the PC.

Now this is not a critical failure. However, since I live alone, there are
no other Users who can use my PC and this re-logging in is a royal pain in
the neck. Is there some way that I can disable this very annoying feature?
BTW, I have now set my PC to notfy me when an update is available and allow
me to choose whether or not I will download and install it.

Change the screensaver setting to not require a login on resume ?

Sounds like a coincidence.
Change the screensaver settings - it is locking the screen when it comes
on - it's a checkbox.

My thanks to both of you. I had originally unchecked the box next to "On
resume, display Welcome screen". This morning, when I looked at that box, it
was checked again - without any intervention from me. Apparently that update
re-checked that box. There were a few other changes made to the screensaver
feature that I did not do. I can undo some of the changes that the update
did, but others I will not be able to undo. Since I have already cancelled
automatic download and install of MS updates, I will be able to go to
Microsoft.com and find out what each update will do before I download and
install it. Unfortunately, I'm sure that MS will not provide all the details
for each update. So, if I decide to install an update, I'll just have to
take my chances that any missing details will not be too disastrous

Nonsense. One or more options/settings in an ever-growing number of
third-party applications may be disallowing the change(s) from "sticking".
These include but are not limited to Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer,
SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, Norton AntiVirus, McAfee
VirusScan and/or Antispyware, and Zone Alarm (Free and Pro).

Any of the above may be responsible for the change of behavior after
installing whatever update you're referring to.

You could subscribe to MS Security e-mail notifications, you can have
advisories, advanced notifications and monthly summaries for the
security updates. They have links to KB articles although those are not
always available immediately. A great deal of detail is in fact
available.

One minor annoyance to me however are the pesky 'nested' Office updates
where you have to relate the reference of the update actually downloaded
to the covering item in the summary, not always obvious.
