Annoying Windows Explorer Problem

Today when navigating the Program Files folder I came across this error:

Windows explorer has stopped working
Followed by:
Windows explorer is restarting

I hoped this was a one-off Vista glitch but not so. Whenever I open the
Program Files folder all is well but when I scroll about a third of the way
through the error appears. I can't duplicate it in any other folder - it's
only the Program Files folder and it occurs 100% of the time. I did a system
restore back to 3 days ago but the problem remains.

Any ideas what may be going on here?

The problem is worse than I thought. I now cannot move files. Copying to
another folder is okay byt moving files from any folder to another or to the
recycle bin is a problem. The moving item dialog box remains active with a
transfer speed of 0 bytes/sec. If I cancel the move, the dialog box reports
it is cancelling but it remains there. I have to resort to ctl-alt-del and
close using the task manager at which point I get the Windows explorer error
as per below. Now I'm starting to get worried...

Take a look at your system log see what's crashing. Could be a video driver
or a specific file/folder under Program Files but the log should point you
in the right direction.

Thanks Michael but where would I find the system log?

Have you tried the System File Checker? Click on the Start orb, go t
All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt, right click and selec
Run as Administrator , then type SFC /SCANNOW and hit the Enter key

Click on start, right click on computer and choose manage
Click on continue
This now gives you event viewer and performance logs amongst overs.
Look in these two to try and find the error

Okay I ran the scan suggested by Lee and it reported: "Windows Resource
Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details
are included in the CBS.Log..." I opened CBS.Log, which is like a million
pages long, and I could immediately tell its of no use to me in diagnosing
this problem. A nice little summary of the key problems would have been
appreciated.

CBS.log is pretty verbose, but your specific data would have been waaaaaaay
at the bottom of that file - you could have advanced to the end and gone
back up from there and found the corrupt files relatively quickly. You
could still do that. =\

It sounds like you've some file corruption issue: it does seem like the "sfc
/scannow" approach you're taking is the right way to go.
