another installation already in progress

I am seeing several SCCM clients indicating updates can not be installed
because another installation is already in progress. the error message seems
to be originated from Windows Updates (as opposed to SCCM itself). Is there
a way I can reset the Automatic Update client (XP sp2) so that it doesn't
think an installation is currently underway? The message I am receiving is
bogus as no other installations have run or are pending reboot, or any other
action.
