I was part of a network at college, and IT there set everyone's laptop to
update automatically - they also made it so that when I go to the Autmatic
Update Options screen (where I set how often to look for/automatically
install updates), everything is grayed out and I can't change anything. Not
that updates are a bad thing, but I don't want them looking every single day
- I'm not connected to the internet each time I fire the laptop up, so the
Automatic Update software hangs, slowing the comp down.

Is there any way to get my options back , so *I* can schedule automatic
updates?

The college IT guys set your computer to automatically logon
their domain and do the updates...If you can, I would
suggest calling the college IT department and ask for any
help they can give, they may have used a particular account
or password.
Your computer is looking for a now non-existent domain and
that hangs the computer.
