WGA apparently downloads but will not install. Get a 0X80246008 error.

Noticed while trying to figure out problem, that I have missed all updates
from July 25 on (I had automatic updates turned on, but never received any
pop up alerts that anything was wrong).

Have tried the 3 different methods listed by Microsoft Support to fix, but
nothing works.

I always checked off on Genuine Windows validation check when downloading MS
freebies, such as Microsoft AntiSpyware and never had a problem.

I have a Dell Computer that came with Windows XP SP1 and was upgraded to SP2.

I would also suggest running a disk cleanup and checkdisk:

Description of the Disk Cleanup Tool in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp

How to Perform Disk Error Checking in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp

Afterward:

Launch Internet Explorer and from the Toolbar select:
Tools > Internet Options > Settings > View Objects.
Right-click on each item denoted as "Windows Genuine
Advantage Validation Tool" and select "Remove".

Afterward, revisit the Windows Update web site.

Please use the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of Microsoft Download Center
pages to request assistance directly from Microsoft:

The Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation check process
does not complete when you try to validate your copy of Windows XP
or Windows 2000 Professional

ignore Carey.

Dell is having a problem with the machines being identified as pirated
when there are not. There is a patch, i don't know if dell has
download a patch at their web site. My key fix should work.

Don't not do this from windows safe mode.
Connect to the internet

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrent
Version\WPAEvents

In the right pane, right-click OOBETimer, and then click Modify.

Change at least one digit of first line value.

Now in the run box type
%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

For preinstalled system use the product key on the machine.
If you installed xp yourself, you will need that key.

Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to
activate Windows, and then click Next. Click Change the Product key.
Type the product key in the New key boxes, and then click Update. If
another Screen pops up-Click Remind me latter.

Now in the run box type
%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

Chose internet and activate (You will need to allow it through your
firewall).

Dell is "not" having a problem with the machines being identified as pirated
when there are not.

You have any "facts" to substantiate your claim?

I have many clients that have Dell computers and they are not having any
problems with WGA. You should not be changing keys that are OEM systems.

Apparently what has happened is some Dell users took their PCs in for repair
and the repair shop used a pirated version of Windows XP to affect a "Repair
Install", and failed to inform the customer as to what transpired.

Oh, brother a tech know it all. You and Carey are both wrong.
You both didn't read the message board post correctly.

This has nothing to do with taking it in to a repair shop. Yes, that
was one example. The other had to do slp. Pre Activated installs.

Someone had a problem and I gave them my key advice and it worked.
I going to keep giving this advice because it worked. It is sound
advice. I wouldn't take Carey word she/he has been wrong in the past
and other Mvp don't agree with her/him.

Microsoft had even said that you might have to change your key on
preinstalled system on an older web site interview and activate it.
Especially if your system came with xp first release.

I went through your listed procedure step by step, but keep getting
Incorrect Product Code window. I double checked the sticker on the Dell XPS
computer case twice to make sure I had the correct Product Code. I performed
the procedure 3 times and got the same results all 3 times.

When I purchased a notebook from Dell, the key underneth my notebook was
different than the one on the system, so I used a NON Dell OEM copy from
another machine formatted, reinstalled and entered in the correct key and
phone Microsoft afterwards to activate it and all is good now, I think the
image they put on their systems may use the same key built into the cd
