Hi:
I am trying to update an old computer I found in a closet: Celeron 433;
128Mb; Win98SE.
I 1st ran the Feb.2004 'Security Update CD' I got from MS - all went well,
but when I try to use Windows Update online, the update page appears, I click
on 'scan for updates' and it does, showing (10) 'Critical Updates' and (40)
'Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE updates'. When I click on 'Review and install
updates', the "activity bar" at the bottom of the window Slowly creeps
along for about 3 minutes before the message "The page cannot be displayed"
appears.
Going thru the other Win98 update questions and answers, I tried:
unregistering and deleting 'Iuctl.dll' and the files in the 'V4' directory;
adding the update URL to the "Trusted Sites" area and changing the settings
to allow the site to do anything it wanted; went to the Advanced tab,
scrolled to the Security section and checked the settings for SSL 2.0, SSL
3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
I even tried going the 'manual' route, via, "Windows Update Catalog
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=8973". When I did that, I got all
the way to the window that told me that there were 73 Critical Updates
available, but clicking on the link caused the same problem: the 'activity
bar' slowly creeped along until I got a "Done" at the bottom left of the
window, but none of the files showed up in the window!
Last, but not least, I just tried posting this same message 3 times to the
"Microsoft Discussion Groups" site, but, even though I was able to login
using my "passport", each time I tried to post, the 'activity bar' slowly
creeped up and then the window 'timed out'!!!!
I give up - I am posting this question using my WinXP computer.
Any suggestions?
