I have disabled search service and turned off indexing...
and also turned off automatic defrag

yet still the HDD keeps on thrashing... what is going on here?

On xp the hd never trashes without reason...

what else can be causing this?? is there another service that
can thrash the disk?

I have 1.25 gb of ram so its
not memory related

If you put your computer to sleep for a 3-4 second and then wake it up does
the problem go away?

using Advance tools might help you find the service that is causing the
problem.
Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Performance Information and Tools and
it should be located on left side at the very bottom.

Disable the "Superfetch" service.

Not to scare you and it is a reach and also unlikely, but... your
system could have been hijacked and is under the remote control of
some hacker. It happens with all the Trojans floating around. Pull the
plug on your Internet connection and see if the disk trashing stops.
Time to worry if it does. It is way more likely just Windows doing
some housecleaning of some sort.

Does it still go on when your system isn't doing anything? I do mean
NOTHING. Only way to tell is shut everything down, then go to Task
Manager and see what processes are left running. Nothing should be but
Windows system files. To narrow it down go to the Processes tab, then
from the menu bar, click on View, then select columns, then add the
two options that track I/O Reads and writes, then expand the Task
Manager window to full screen and you'll see what process is
reading/writing to your drive because you're now monitoring it in real
time.
