I use a external hardrive to store all my music on and have changed to
ditrectory to suit. For some reason on my new "whiz-bang" laptop running the
wmp bundled with windows 7 everytime i try to rip my cd's it freezes, takes
way too long and is constantly retrieving update media. can anyone tell me
why or how to fix it?

Did you check the burn settings under the options menu? Also, you should
check to see if there is an updated driver for your DVR drive.
