Anti spyware/malware/virus

With the help of the guys in the network forum, I was able to successfully
complete a LAN via cross over with my PC and notebook. What made it
successful was removing the Norton Symantec.

I'm using a firewall but am still paranoid that I could get something bad
via email and/or the other online services my family uses for school and
communication.

I am provided Symantec from work for free but since I cant use it due to the
LAN conflicts, is there a product any of you recommend to download free with
free daily/weekly updates?

The best Windows Vista protection suite I have
used is Windows OneCare. Though not free, it
is very comprehensive in preventing malware from
entering into your system. You can try it free

Does it come with a service contract so to speak? I know I will read this at
the point of pre-purchase but what is your experience with updating the
definitions/indexes?

It includes email, P2P and instant messaging modules among others.

As well as Windows Defender you can also install Spybot Search & Destroy for
anti-spyware.

IE7 already has an anti-phishing filter but there is also a free add-on from
Trend Micro, TrendProtect, which can visually indicate suspect sites when
you search online so you can avoid ever clicking those links.

Comodo is a free Vista-compatible firewall. I haven't tried it on my Vista
machine, but it works well on my XP machines.

AVG has an excellent firewall that I'm using on my Vista machine. It is
not, however, free.

I have not read any comparison tests that rated this highly.

I have not had any malware intrusions on my own
computers during the last two years being protected
by Windows OneCare.

I use a layered defense: my PCs are behind a router which does NAT, and
my Vista PCs also use ZoneAlarm as a firewall. The router takes care of
inbound firewalling, and ZA does (coarse-grained) outbound firewalling.

I also use AVG and SpyBot on my Vista PCs; both are set to auto-update
and to auto-scan nightly. And, I manually run AdAware on the Vista PCs.

is there anything to read regarding this subject (latest trends on
intrusions)? seems to me that the big email companies like gmail, hotmail,
yahoo, etc. have better service in the last couple years as compared to
years past. Meaning, I don't see as much virus, spyware and spam as I use
to. Have the bad guys quit targeting the net at large and started
pinpointing their targets to an objective?
