Windows doesn't have an anti-virus, so not sure what you disabled there
(unless you uninstalled One Care).

Did the Dell rep say why it would conflict with Vista?

You only need one anti-virus, if you have Avast running just go with that
one, it is a good performer.

If you are desperate to pay for an anti-virus solution, go for ESET's NOD32.

If you want a good freebie, use Avast 4 Home (free registration required)

Re firewalls, for et 3rd party stuff and stay with the Vista firewall..

Might want to take a look at Avira 9. Also free, and it now comes
with built in real-time malware protection too.

My number one choice for an antivirus program is Eset's NOD32 antivirus. It
has a small foot print and is light on computer resources.

For a free program I would choose Avast.

Kaspersky Internet Security is an excellent program but I had it for 6
months before I finally learned how to really use it properly. If it won't
let you download something trust it because I tried to download a codec for
media player and when Kaspersky wouldn't allow me I disabled KIaspersky and
downloaded it and installed it and wouldn't you know I infected my computer.

The more the infected the mind, the easier it is to infect the
computer.
