AntiSpyware winds everything down then up

I ran AntiSpyware (AS) and it goes through my folders (hard drive) without an
issue but when it goes through the registry - bang - or b-a-n-----g.
Everything grinds to a halt. Soon applications are shutting down because of
Spyware. Then it tells me Virtual Memory is low - I have 512 M of Ram and
60Gb drive (half used). What's the deal?
