Antivrus System

Hi Folks

I'm wondering what antivirus system to use on a Windows 2000 server system
that's being used as a home PC. Can anyone recommend any?

I currently have Computer Associates eTrust ezAntivirus installed. Its free
for twelve months. I have not heard much about it and it has never detected a
virus(few days use so far). So I'm thinking, can it be worth having if they
are willing to let you have it free for 12 months?

automatically as the paid version, they hope you will like

Thanks mate. I've tested the EICAR test files and the first two files were
stopped on downlaod. The other two zipped ones were not. However, they were
picked up by the on demand AV scan I ran afterwards.

This suggests that CA is ok for certain viruses but perhaps not thorough
enough for more advanced viruses which could nest themselves in zipped
archives and then self extract once downloaded.

I need an AV utility than will catch these embedded viruses on download. I
have sent an email to CA to warn them of the problem.

There are anti virus News Groups specifically for this type of discussion.

microsoft.public.scripting.virus.discussion
microsoft.public.security.virus
alt.comp.virus
alt.comp.anti-virus

CA eTrust is a good and reccomended AV application. I was not aware that it will run on a
Server Platform. With many AV vendors are are speciific versions for workstations and for
servers.

Stick with eTrust. As Jim noted, you can test the system with the EICAR Test File.

Makes sure CA eTrust has "archive file" scanning enabled to scan a ZIP file.

Absolutely! It's great software. Computer Associates has a
"marketing-plan",
namely to entice you to try the software for a year, and then,
year-after-year,
for you to pay the annual renewal fees,
in order to get a continuing revenue stream from you.
(Just like the cable-TV and satellite-TV providers -- it's the
"year-after-year"
money they want, not the "up-front" and/or "installation" fees.)

Plus, it's annual fees are _less_ than its main competitors (Macafee
and Norton).

It runs great on my old, slow (Pentium 233, 96MB) laptop.
