A number of testers and users have noticed performance improvements.
No one as yet has published hard benchmarks to prove any metrics.
Personally I have noticed improvements in general feel of the OS.

Despite Microsoft's posturing there SP1 does nothing to speed up disc access
in Vista.

Carey:

Here's the spec of that system:
Phenom 9700 quad-core processor
ATi Radeon 3850 graphics card with 256MB RAM
ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe motherboard
2GB (2 x 1GB) Corsair Dominator CM2X1024-8500C5D RAM
Western Digital Raptor 10,000RPM 150GB primary hard drive
Western Digital Caviar 7,200RPM 500GB secondary hard drive

Most people do not have such a system:

My more modest system:
Dell 9100 Dimension desktop:
P4 3.0 GHz hyperthreaded CPU
2GB RAM
Two Western Digital Caviar 7,200RPM hard disks
nVidea 6800 video card

My experience:
To me, Vista sans SP1 had about the same performance as XP SP2 on the same
computer.
Vista SP1 is about the same also.
