Any sound only comes out as static

After installing the last update every sound makes only a static sound. Be
it the simple "beep", to the windows chime at start up, to a MP3 that is
stored on my computer...frankly it is driving me nuts!

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1) when
posting to this newsgroup, please.

What update(s) did you install?
