Hello Trigonometry

First, check to make sure the lens is clean on the mouse

The batteries in the mouse may be gettting low. You might replace the
with fresh ones as a test to see how it works afterwards

You can also press the reset button on the wireless mouse receiver an
click on the small "connect" button on the bottom of the mouse to rese
the connection to see if that helps

Do you have the latest drivers installed for the mouse

Hope this helps

many times that is caused by some program using 100% of the CPU cycles, when
it is finished, the mouse works again.
if you have task manager open, watch to see which process is taking all the
CPU when the mouse 'FREEZES'

Now for the rest of the story. For the wireless mouse, it was the
batteries. (Proof of brain rot or mad cow that this didn't dawn on
me.)
Also, apparently I need to turn off mouse to extend battery life when
not using the computer.
AND the other mouse with wire if hooked to the computer only
works during start up and it still stops. This wasn't always
true. So perhaps I am not ready for old folks home just yet.
As I only need one mouse, I'll be OK.
And this computer has been checked from stem to stern for
viruses and malware and it is clean. I have quite alot
of open source freeware from Source Forge on the machine so they
must be doing a decent checking their software.

Again Thanks

Well, it seems the computer is indeed infected with
something that disables the mouse in standard mouse.
It took a couple of weeks but both computer mice
quite working. The standard wired mouse only
works in Safe Mode and the wireless is completely
down.

It seems to me the best way to fix this is to
buy the Vista disks and remount the OS. And
take the hit on the OEM distribution of MS OS
currently on the system. I am so ticked I've
considered getting a Mac but they are way over
priced plus I use special software that only works on
an MS OS. The Tech's 've hired are so incompetent
that buying another cheap 400 dollar computer
may be nearly costly effective.....ArrG...weep..
sigh...

What do I need to know to remount the Vista
OS on the computer? How hard is it to get
the needed drivers? The MS Vista OS cost 120
dollars at Costco. I'd like to do this myself.

Trig,

I'm sorry to hear that. You can usually download the latest device
driver versions directly from the device manufacturer's website. I would
recommend that you have the drivers all downloaded and saved on some
external media (ex: DVD or USB flash drive) to have handy after
installing Vista. This way you have them in case you do not have network
access at first.

Dependinf on what type of Vista you have, these tutorials will help
show you how to do a clean install with it.

Hope this helps,

I have really got to ask this question of you!

Why would you even begin to recommend reinstalling the operating system for
a mouse driver problem?

It seems that all you really want to do is send people to your web site -
for anything and everything.

If you recommend reinstalling the O/S for a problem such as this - it is
shameful on your part.

If your web site is good, people will find it without your constant
advertizing of it.

Hello Richard,

I did not recommend a reinstall. I told him that he should be able
download the drivers from the manufacturer's website.

I only included the information about reinstalling because that was
also what Trig had asked about, if that was what he wanted to do. Sorry
if that was misunderstood.

I usually post links to the tutorials that I wrote to help make
resolving a person's question or problem easier. The tutorials contain
more information and screenshots that can make it easier. Plus, it would
just be to tedious and repetitive to post all of that over and over
again for each time the same question is asked. I'm sure you know how
that is.

I'm sorry that it seems like advertising to you, but they are only
there to help others completely free with no strings attached. You do
not even need to be a member. I would never just post a link that had
nothing to do with trying to help resolve the OP's question. I hate and
despise spammers myself.

I hope this has helped clear things up.

Regards,
Shawn
