Any way to reinstall Vista ?

I've looked all over, and I find the usual meaningless jargon
about how to "install" Vista ... like any monkey couldn't
do it ... but nothing about how to backup working folders
and email .. and then do a fresh install after uninstalling
Vista. I'm using Vista Business, and I've been testing it
for about a year now. The original install was as an upgrade
over XP, on a Dell Dimension 9150. I had the option to do
a fresh install, but I chose the upgrade just to see the
result. I still get weird effects from that .. like "access
denied" to all my personal folders, so I keep my working
docs on a seperate partition. Also, I found that if I disabled
the UAC, Vista was much more manageable, and many
of my older programs would run. The Vista UAC is a joke
and needs to go away bigtime. I use F-secure for Vista,
and that is much better security. I'm sure McAfee is
equally good.

My goal now is to do a backup, and start fresh on the
Dell with proper hardware drivers for Vista, and a
reformat on a newer larger hard drive. And then recover
my backup without destroying all my work. I know
Vista and Microsoft well enough to be very suspicious
of this.

Also, I would like to totally remove the UAC, and
anything claiming to be Vista security. There were
beta hacks to do this, but I hesitate on a working
machine.

I did manage to install OpenGL that is compatible
with all of my games and CAD software. I did that
by installing AutoCAD 2007 which bundles the
OpenGL compatibility ... about a $5000 fix, but
I did not have to pay for it, sooo ....

I'm going to try this when SP1 comes out. I realize
that SP1 is not really "Vista compatible", and instead
is "Vista Only" regards most hardware, and I may
have severe hardware problems as a result. But,
I'm testing and evaluating Vista Business for this
company, and I need to know.

It would help if you told us exactly what you want to backup. You talk
about backing up folders and e-mail, but what folders do you need to backup
and what e-mail program are you using?

UAC can easily be disabled if you choose to do so without any hacks or
things like that.

See. Right here is what I'm talking about. There seems to
be nothing but jargon users out there who can't understand
a straight comment, and do nothing but repeat what was
asked.

No kidding. That is what I said I did. And if you had a clue,
you would also know about the DOS level hacks that shut
off the rest of the security in Vista not controlled by UAC
and giving somewhat better XP support to older apps and
older app installs.

That is poop bordering on a total lie. The XP compatibillity dlls are
so out
of date that they are worthless. The only way to get XP compatibility
is to directly copy the most recent XP dll library from an XP install.

None of that stuff works. It is just a lot of jargon,
and the techs will then flip over to "it must be
your box". You ARE aware that a DVD codec
is not included in Vista, aren't you? I mostly
need to know if anybody has actually done
it ... and what are the pitfalls.

Ordinarily, someone who knows what they are
doing will take a 4 gig thumb drive and just do
a direct copy of exported email components
.... and also copy working directories. Of course
there are the MORONS who try to backup apps
and the OS settings, but that is their problem.
I'm amazed at those who seem to think there
are more than working directories and email
to backup ???? Where do they come from ?

Get your company to get somebody who knows what they are doing to evaluate
Vista instead. At least somebody that knows about NTFS file persmissions.

There are lots of other things that an advanced user would back up to save
time in reconfiguring a new installation. And of course they will not
actually be backing up any files in order to reinstall either, as they will
have them all on separate partitions.

If you are a gamer that uses CAD, and really serious about
compatibility, and... if you are going to format your HD anyway.
You may want to go to the more proven XP. Trust me this will save you
many hours of grief on researching incompatibility issues. and money
to replace all the stuff that is Vista incompatible.

Run migwiz and migrate all your data and settings to a single file.
Re-install Vista, run migwiz and restore all your data and settings.
